The national park is divided into three zones – the core zone, Manu cultural zone, and Manu biosphere reserve. Access to the core zone is restricted to scientists and researchers. The cultural zone and reserved zone is open for visitors.
Over 30 Quechua-speaking native indigenous communities call Manu their home. Embarking on our expedition from Cusco at the break of dawn, we traverse captivating Andean valleys and quaint rural communities.
Our journey unfolds with a visit to the ancient Ninamarca’s tombs, revealing the rich pre-Inca heritage.
Paucartambo, a colonial gem, awaits our exploration.
Amidst the cloud forest, we pause for a delightful lunch, surrounded by endemic species like the spectacled bear and the iconic cock of the rock, Peru’s national bird, engaging in a unique courtship display.
The lush landscape presents a tapestry of orchids, bromeliads, and ferns. As we continue our descent, nature’s spectacle captivates us, culminating in our arrival at the Atalaya port.
Here, a swift 30-minute river journey transports us to our inaugural night’s abode, promising an immersive experience amidst nature’s wonders.
At the crack of dawn, we’ll cruise to the macaw clay lick, where diverse parrot species gather daily, feasting on mineral-rich clay to aid digestion and eliminate toxins. Afterward, a tasty breakfast awaits back at the lodge.
Post-breakfast, a 2-3 hour forest stroll precedes lunch and leisure, including river swimming. Optional zip-lining is available. Afternoon plans include exploring Machuwasi lake on rafts, observing birds like the hoatzin and, with luck, spotting monkeys and capybaras.
A night walk for insect and amphibian spotting follows, leading to dinner and overnight stay.
Optional Zip Line: Experience a thrilling jungle canopy view with high-quality equipment. After soaring through the treetops, rappel down 20 meters. (Optional fishing available.)
After a delicious breakfast, we can go to take a bath in the hot waters of Atalaya and then we will board our boat back to Puerto Atalaya where our bus will wait for us to return to Cusco. We will have lunch along the route back to Cusco, arriving around 5:30-6:30 p.m.
