Manu Peru Details
Manu Rainforest Tours from Cusco

The five-day Manu Rainforest Tours from Cusco is one of our signature tours. This tour takes you deep into the cultural zone of Manu Peru. Accompanied by a local English-speaking tour guide you will discover some of the best of what Manu National Park has to offer.

Manu Peru is the biggest rainforest in the world. It is spread in 1,532,806 hectares. It has different tiers of cloud forest and lowland rainforest that raises from 150 meters above sea level to 4200 meters above sea level.

Manu Jungle is divided into three zones, cultural zone, core zone, and Manu biosphere reserve (reserved zone). Access to the core zone is restricted to scientists and researchers.

Manu Cultural Zone is home to over 32 native indigenous communities. They are untouched by modernity. In fact, they still rely on medicinal plants found in the tropical forest to cure any sickness.

Tours to Manu National Park are popular among travelers in Cusco. It is closer to Cusco which allows them to simply jump off on a jungle trip after visiting Machu Picchu. Manu Peru is also home to different flora and fauna, most of which are distinct to the region.

Manu Peru Itinerary
Manu Rainforest Tours

Day 1Cusco (3,300 m.a.s.l.) - Cloud Forest (1,700 m.a.s.l.) - Pilcopata Inn (600 m.a.s.l.)

Embarking from Cusco at the crack of dawn in our vehicles, we’ll traverse captivating valleys amid the Andes and charming rural communities. Exploring pre-Inca Ninamarca tombs precedes a stop in Paucartambo, a colonial gem, for a visit to the captivating town museum.

Paucartambo's bridge remains since the colonial times.

Our journey includes a lunch stop in the cloud forest. Descending further through this biodiverse area, we’ll encounter endemic species like the spectacled bear and the charismatic cock of the rock, Peru’s national bird known for its unique courtship ritual. Orchids, bromeliads, ferns, and other flora adorn our path.

The spectacle of nature continues until we reach our first-night abode, the Pilcopata Inn.

Day 2Pilcopata - Manu Lodge (450 m.a.s.l.)

After an early breakfast, we’ll embark on a wildlife observation stroll to encounter monkeys and birds in the forest. Following this, we’ll visit a coca plantation and a wildlife rescue center.

The small town of Kosñipata or Pilcopata portrays the typical picturesque small town in the Amazon's highlands.

Our journey then takes us to Puerto Atalaya, situated alongside the Alto Madre de Dios River at an elevation of 500 meters. Descending by boat, we’ll marvel at the diverse bird species like herons, vultures, and cormorants until reaching the Amazon Manu Lodge.

There, we’ll enjoy a river bath, have lunch, and in the afternoon, explore a swamp to observe toucans, woodpeckers, and macaws. Before dinner, we’ll venture out to spot the nocturnal glow of alligator eyes. The night will be spent at the hostel.

Day 3Manu Lodge (450 m.a.s.l.)

In the early morning, we’ll embark on our boat, heading to the macaw clay lick—a riverbank wall where various parrot species, including the blue-headed parrot, white-eyed parakeet, and Chestnut Front macaw, gather daily.

Feeding on the clay, rich in minerals, aids digestion and toxin elimination.

Returning to the lodge, a delectable breakfast awaits. Subsequently, a 2 to 3-hour forest walk ensues.

After lunch at the cabin, guests can rest or enjoy a swim in the river. In the afternoon, we explore Machuwasi lake on rafts, spotting birds like the prehistoric hoatzin and, if lucky, other animals like monkeys and capybaras. A night walk follows, seeking insects and amphibians before resting back at the lodge.

A group of explorers go through the canopy bridges while they tour the rainforest.

Free optional activity – zip line: Guests at the Lodge can experience a breathtaking jungle view while soaring through the canopy between elevated platforms. All equipment is high-quality and safe. After a thrilling journey through the treetops, rappel down 25 meters to the ground.

Day 4Manu Lodge – Shyntuya Hot Springs

Rising early, we savor breakfast before boarding our boat to cruise along the Alto Madre de Dios River for approximately two hours. During this journey, observe capybaras along the riverbanks and spot alligators.

Shintuya's waterfalls will be our destiny for the fourth day in the Amazon.

Eventually, we reach the Shyntuya community, a mere 5 minutes away, to indulge in the healthful hot springs. A 30-minute walk leads to a captivating waterfall cascading into a sizable natural pool.

Returning to our hostel, we take a rest before embarking on another night walk, concluding our eventful day.

Our final destinatio will be Cusco, which we expect to reach by night.
