Puerto Maldonado Airport / Bus Terminal
09:00 AM
We will welcome travelers upon arrival at the Puerto Maldonado airport or bus station. We will then take a short ride to our office in the heart of the city for a quick registration. From there, we’ll head to the river dock and board a boat. We will be gliding along the serene Madre de Dios River for about an hour toward the Philadelphia community. After a brief stop, we’ll continue upstream on the Tambopata River for another 10 minutes until we reach our Amazon lodge.
At the lodge, our local tour guide will introduce us to the lodge’s policies before we settle into our cozy rooms. After some time to rest and recharge, we’ll enjoy a delicious lunch prepared with fresh, local ingredients.
In the afternoon, we will embark on our first adventure. It will be a two-hour guided walk through the dense rainforest. As we make our way along jungle trails, our expert guide will introduce us to the region’s ancient trees. We will see trees like the towering Brazil nut tree and the sacred ceiba.
We will also encounter medicinal plants used for centuries by Indigenous communities. Surrounded by the calls of tropical birds and the rustling of leaves, we will feel the heartbeat of Mother Nature beneath the forest canopy.
The trail will lead us to a 45-meter (148-foot) birdwatching tower. We will climb above the treetops for a breathtaking panoramic view of the Amazon jungle. From this vantage point, we may spot playful monkeys leaping between branches, along with colorful birds flying across the canopy. The Tambopata National Reserve is teeming with life. It offers endless opportunities to observe unique wildlife in its natural habitat.
As evening descends, we’ll return to the lodge for a brief rest before heading back out onto the river. Under the night sky, we’ll take a boat ride along the Tambopata River in search of nocturnal animals. The riverbanks come alive at night. They offer glimpses of caimans resting along the shores, along with owls, nightjars. If we are fortunate—the world’s largest rodent, the capybara.
If the sky is clear, the Milky Way will light up the night with its endless stars and occasional shooting stars. It creates a truly magical moment on the water. After the night excursion, we’ll return to the lodge for a well-earned dinner. This will be marking the end of an exciting first day in the heart of the Tambopata Rainforest.
We will start the second day with an early wake-up call. We will be savoring a fresh infusion of coffee or tea before heading out on another exciting adventure. At dawn, we’ll take a boat along the Tambopata River, navigating for about 45 minutes. On the way, we might spot elusive wildlife like jaguars or anacondas basking along the riverbanks.
Our destination is the Chuncho Parrot and Macaw Clay Lick. Here vibrant macaws and parrots gather in the early morning. We will set up our spotting scopes and take in the dazzling display of color and sound for more than two hours. As these magnificent birds feast on the mineral-rich clay, we’ll enjoy a picnic-style breakfast along the riverside, surrounded by the peaceful sounds of the rainforest.
Afterward, we will explore the smaller arms of the Tambopata River. We may encounter capybaras, tapirs, wild pigs, and a variety of monkeys. Keep an eye out for caimans and turtles sunning themselves along the shores, and perhaps even spot a feline predator hiding within the dense foliage. Along the way, we’ll marvel at the scenic landscapes that make the Tambopata National Reserve a paradise for nature lovers.
In the afternoon, we’ll embark on a visit to Lake Sandoval. A short car ride followed by a peaceful boat journey will take us to this hidden gem of the Peruvian Amazon. As we glide across the calm waters, we may spot macaws, herons, and wild ducks flying overhead. Occasionally, we might see a family of giant river otters playing near the shore or catch sight of a black caiman lurking just beneath the surface.
At Lake Sandoval, we’ll switch to a small rowing boat for a closer look at the lake’s wildlife. With some luck, we’ll even get a chance to try fishing for piranhas. Using simple hooks, we’ll catch and photograph these fascinating fish before gently releasing them back into the water to preserve the ecosystem.
As dusk approaches, we’ll paddle back to the river dock, where our boat awaits to take us to the lodge. The fading sunlight will paint the rainforest in golden hues, offering a perfect moment to reflect on the day’s adventures. After a delicious dinner, we’ll wind down for the night, ready to rest and recharge for the next day of our Tambopata Rainforest Tour.
After breakfast, we will set out on a short 15-minute boat ride toward Monkey Island. It is a small sanctuary within the heart of the Tambopata National Reserve. This island is home to several playful monkey species, including capuchins, tamarins, and howler monkeys. We’ll observe them swinging through the trees, foraging for fruit, and interacting with one another in their natural environment. The experience offers a close-up glimpse of the Amazon’s lively primates and the complex dynamics of the rainforest.
We’ll return to the lodge before noon. We will enjoy a delicious lunch and relax before our afternoon adventures. Afterward, we’ll board a boat and head to the calm waters of the Tambopata River for a fishing excursion. Using traditional fishing methods, we’ll try our hand at catching local river fish. Whether you’re an experienced angler or trying it for the first time, fishing in the Amazon offers a rewarding way to connect with the river’s ecosystem.
Later in the afternoon, we will take on the exhilarating canopy adventure. A guided canopy walk will bring us high into the treetops. We’ll walk across suspension bridges and enjoy a bird’s-eye view of the vast rainforest below. As we move through the canopy, we’ll have the chance to see colorful birds, butterflies, and even monkeys making their way through the treetops.
The highlight of the experience will be an exciting zip line ride, where we’ll glide through the forest canopy, surrounded by the sounds of nature.
By the time we descend back to the forest floor, the sun will begin to set, casting a warm glow over the jungle. We’ll take a moment by the riverbank to enjoy the Amazon sunset, a breathtaking sight as the rainforest transitions into night.
As the stars appear in the sky, the jungle awakens with nocturnal life. With flashlights in hand, we’ll embark on a night hike through the trails surrounding the lodge. Our guide will lead us in search of nocturnal creatures, including night monkeys, porcupines, sloths, and various insects and reptiles. The sounds of the night, from distant owl calls to the rustle of leaves underfoot, will immerse us in a whole new side of the Tambopata Rainforest.
After the night hike, we’ll return to the lodge for a hearty dinner. The evening will offer the perfect time to reflect on the day’s adventures and unwind before resting for our final day in the Amazon.
We will start the final day with an early breakfast at the lodge, savoring fresh Amazonian flavors. After a brief rest, we’ll set out on one last adventure—an excursion to the Parrot Clay Lick. A short boat ride and a walk through the forest will bring us to this vibrant site, where flocks of parrots gather to feed on the nutrient-rich clay.
We will watch in awe as hundreds of colorful birds, from parakeets to macaws, create a lively spectacle of sound and movement. This unique natural event offers an unforgettable glimpse into the delicate balance of the Tambopata Rainforest ecosystem.
As we make our way through the trails, our guide will introduce us to the towering trees that dominate this part of the National Park. One of these giants, standing over 700 years old, will leave us amazed with its sheer size.
We’ll ascend into the canopy, walking across hanging bridges suspended between the treetops. Here, we’ll discover a hidden world where toucans, hummingbirds, and woodpeckers thrive among orchids, epiphytic plants, and curious monkeys. This elevated experience will offer a peaceful moment to connect with the heart of the Amazon jungle.
After soaking in these final views, we’ll return to the lodge and prepare for our journey back to Puerto Maldonado. We’ll take a boat along the river one last time, enjoying the sights and sounds of the rainforest as it bids us farewell. Once we reach the city, we’ll collect any luggage left at the office and head to either the airport or the bus station, depending on travel arrangements.
As our Tambopata Jungle Tour comes to an end, we’ll carry the memories of the Amazon’s wildlife, majestic trees, and serene river journeys with us. This experience will stay with us long after we’ve left, reminding us of the beauty and wonder that thrives within the Tambopata National Park.
