Tour Details

The Tambopata National Reserve is located in southeastern Peru, near the border with Bolivia and Brazil. It lies in the region of Madre de Dios and spans the provinces of Tambopata and Inambari. The reserve covers 1,060.6 square miles (274,690 hectares) and is under the direct authority of SERNANP (Servicio Nacional de Áreas Naturales Protegidas)

The Tambopata Clay Lick is one of the most famous natural attractions of the reserve. You can see many species of parrots at this place, including blue-and-yellow macaws (Ara ararauna), red-fronted macaws, military macaws (Ara militaris) and blue-headed parrots (Pionus menstruus).

The Tambopata National Reserve is also one of the best places to see monkeys. The most common species is the Squirrel Monkey. They eat fruit, which they gather by leaping from tree to tree or by hanging upside down from branches with their tails.

During the tour, you’ll also spot a great variety of wildlife such as boas, snakes, black caimans, giant otters, and more.

Itinerary

Day 1Puerto Maldonado - Tambopata River Jungle Walking

You’ll be greeted at the airport or bus station and transferred to our downtown office for registration.

Then, we’ll take our transport to the lodge, followed by a boat trip up the Tambopata River to reach the lodge.

Your local guide will brief you on the hotel policies and you’ll have time for a nap and lunch before embarking on a two-hour jungle walk with an expert guide.

You’ll have the chance to see a variety of medicinal plants, trees, and wildlife such as monkeys, toucans, and macaws.

In the evening, we’ll take a boat ride to search for nocturnal animals like caimans, owls, and nightjars.

On a clear night, you can witness the stunning view of the Milky Way and its shooting stars.

Dinner will follow after our return.

Day 2Chuncho Macaw Clay lick - Spoting Caiman & Piranha Fishing

Start your day with a refreshing cup of coffee or tea before embarking on an unforgettable journey to the Macaw and Parrot Clay Lick at dawn.

Take a boat ride along the Tambopata River for over 45 minutes, keeping an eye out for exotic wildlife such as jaguars or anacondas.

Once you arrive at the Chuncho Parrot and Macaw Clay Lick, set up your spotting scope to witness the breathtaking spectacle of colorful birds for over two hours.

Enjoy a delicious breakfast on the riverbank while taking in the stunning views.

After breakfast, return to the boat and venture into the small rivers and tributaries of the Tambopata River in search of more wildlife, including capybaras, tapirs, wild pigs, monkeys, caimans, turtles, and felines. Take in the beautiful landscapes along the way.

In the afternoon, return to the city via the same route, and then head to Yacumama Lake, a stunning body of water with exuberant scenery and the most impressive sunsets in the region.

This lake is home to many macaws, parrots, and parakeets, and you may even spot black caimans, herons, cormorants, wild ducks, swallows, and piranhas.

Take a small rowing boat to the point where you can fish for piranhas, and then release them back into their ecosystem.

End your day with a peaceful rest at your lodge.

Day 3Amazon Lodge - Sandoval Lake / Spotting Wild Life

After breakfast, you will embark on a 15-minute boat ride towards Lake Sandoval, located within the Tambopata National Reserve.

The lake is renowned for its exceptional biodiversity, and during the walk along the wooden path of almost 3.5km, you’ll be amazed by the diverse wildlife that inhabits the area.

At the end of the path, you’ll board a rowboat to explore the lake, where you can spot black caimans, giant otters, herons, turtles, monkeys, macaws, and wild ducks.

In the afternoon, you’ll visit a native family belonging to the “Matsigenka” culture, where you’ll have the opportunity to interact with them and learn about their customs and traditions.

You’ll learn how to use bows and arrows, spin and weave cotton, and create ropes using tree bark. Additionally, you’ll witness their remarkable ability to make fire using only their hands.

As the day comes to a close, you’ll head out into the jungle with flashlights to explore the nocturnal wildlife.

This is one of the best opportunities to spot a variety of animals, including porcupines, arachnids, sloths, insects, reptiles, opossums, night monkeys, owls, and more.

After a thrilling nighttime adventure, you’ll return to the hotel for dinner and rest.

Day 4 Amazon Lodge - Canopy Walk - Puerto Maldonado

After a delicious breakfast and a short rest, you’ll embark on a boat ride and walk along a path discussing the towering giant trees, including one that’s over 700 years old.

During the walk, you’ll observe the diverse fauna that inhabits the canopy level of the forest, such as toucans, hummingbirds, woodpeckers, monkeys, lizards, and orchids.

Later in the morning, you’ll return to the city to retrieve any left-behind luggage before heading to the airport or bus station, depending on your travel plans.
